Club Information

NAME: HB Køge

FOUNDED: 2007

LOCATION: Herfølge, Køge Municipality, Denmark

COLORS: Blue, Black & White

LEAGUE: Danish 1st Division(Mens) Kvindeligaen(Womens)

WEBSITE: www.hbkoge.dk

HB Køge is a professional football club founded in 2009 as a merger of two of the proudest clubs in Danish football, Herfølge Boldklub and Køge Boldklub, both former Danish Champions. HB Køge was established through a mutual ambition of developing and running a football club with the aim to compete with the best.  In addition to the proud history and three Danish Championships, HB Køge and the two mother clubs have a great history in terms of developing talents. Both mother clubs have developed players for Danish and International football, as well as the Danish National Team.

HB Køge was formed in the summer of 2009 as a merger of Herfølge Boldklub and Køge BKs men’s football teams. Køge Boldklub, founded in 1895, was a leading force in Danish football in the 1950’s. In fact, Køge Boldklub was the first Danish football club outside Copenhagen to win the Danish Championship (1954). A leading force in Danish football in the 1950’s, Køge Boldklub repeated the feat in 1975. Herfølge, a town of approximately 7.000 residents five kilometres south of Køge, became famous when Herfølge Boldklub, founded in 1921, sensationally won the Danish Superliga in the summer of 2000. Lead by legendary former Danish international John ‘Faxe’ Jensen as player-manager, the minors fooled Danish giants FC Copenhagen and Brøndby IF and took home the title in the second season after having won promotion to the league.

In a bid to create a bigger football force, the two clubs mergedin 2009. Having competed in the Danish second tier since then, apart from a stint in the top league Superliga in 2011-12, HB Køge now fight to get back into the Danish top tier again. As part of this process, two former Danish internationals, Daniel Agger and Lars Jacobsen, took charge of the men’s first team in 2021.

After Capelli Sport started investing in HB Køge, the club’s amateur women’s team rapidly rose through the Danish leagues. Five sensational straight promotions lead them to the Danish top tier Gjensidige Kvindeliga. Having been won by either Fortuna Hjørring or Brøndby IF for the past 19 years, HB Køge incredibly broke the deadlock and took home the national league in their first attempt!  This led to two UEFA Women’s Champions League qualifiers against Sparta Prague. HB Køge continued surprising their opponents and beat the Czechs 3-0 on aggregate.  Playing against the likes of FC Barcelona and Arsenal FC in the UEFA Women’s Champions League group stage in 2021/2022 and Juventus in 2022/2023, HB Køge is now establishing themselves amongst the European top teams.
